How to Measure

How to Measure Your Space for Your New Cabinets

Cabinets are one of the most important aspects of any kitchen remodel or bathroom renovation. Not only do they provide crucial storage space, but they can also be a major focal point in the room. When choosing new cabinets, one of the most important considerations is size. Here are a few tips on how to measure your space for your new cabinets:

Measure the width and depth of the room.

Get your tape measure and measure the width of the room from wall to wall. Then, measure the depth of the room from front to back. Measuring the width and depth of the room will give you a good idea of how much space you have to work with.

This will also give you a good starting point for determining the overall size of the kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets you will need. If your room is particularly small, you may need to consider smaller cabinets. The upper and lower corner cabinets are usually the smallest, so these may be a good option for a smaller space.

Measure the height of the ceiling.

It’s important to know the ceiling height when choosing cabinets, as this will impact the size of the cabinets you can choose. Ceiling heights can vary greatly, so it’s important to get an accurate measurement. If your ceilings are on the shorter side, you may need to select shallower cabinets. Conversely, if your ceilings are taller, you may be able to go with taller cabinets.

Consider how you want the cabinets to be arranged.

Base cabinets or wall cabinets can be arranged in a variety of ways, so it’s important to think about how you want them to be laid out before measuring spaces. Do you want your cabinets to run along one wall? Or do you want them to be arranged in a certain way? This will impact the size and number of cabinets you need. Make sure to take this into consideration when measuring your space.

Mark off the area where the cabinets will go.

Once you have an idea of how you want your cabinets to be arranged, mark off the area where they will go. Your contractor will be able to use this as a guide when installing the cabinets. Marking off the area will also help you to visualize the space and get a better sense of how the cabinets will fit.

Take into account any existing fixtures.

When measuring your space for cabinets, consider any existing features such as windows, doors, or appliances. These will impact the size and placement of your new cabinets. If you have existing fixtures, such as a sink, range hood, refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, microwave, or stove, that will need to be accommodated, make sure to take those into consideration when measuring your space. You’ll need to leave enough room around these fixtures for them to be properly installed and functional.

Make sure to leave enough room for walking space.

When measuring your space for cabinets, be sure to leave enough room for people to comfortably walk through the area. You don’t want your cabinets to be so big that they make it difficult to move around the kitchen or bathroom.

Sketch out a rough layout.

Once you have all of your measurements, it can be helpful to sketch out a rough layout of the space. This will give you a good idea of how the cabinets will fit and where they will be located. Sketching out a layout is also a helpful way to visualize the space and make sure that everything will fit properly. Make a note of the location of the plumbing, ducting, and ventilation on your sketch. Also, note any electrical information, such as light switches and outlets, that must remain or may need to be moved.

It is also helpful to provide additional photos of your space.
